HiRef Uses BITZER Screw Compressors for Adiabatic Cooling of a Data Center

For the adiabatic cooling of a data center with air / air heat exchangers, the Italian company HiRef S.p.A. used screw compressors from BITZER for the first time. The application is equipped with the low GWP R513A refrigerant, so it can be converted to the HFO R1234ze refrigerant with a GWP value lower than 6 at any time. A solution that is not only sustainable, but also extremely economical.

Technological development and the constantly growing volume of data have led over the years to a steady increase in thermal loads in data centers. The prerequisite for optimal server performance is moderate and constant temperatures that require constant cooling. This makes the reliability of the refrigeration system an essential factor: The more the cooling is constant, the more stable and efficient the processes are.

The Italian company HiRef S.p.A. specializes in the production of air conditioning systems for technical and technological rooms. Its climate control solutions for the IT area are considered particularly efficient and help reduce energy consumption and therefore operating costs. For a data center in Offenbach, highly reliable yet sustainable cooling had to be designed in collaboration with Cooltec Systems Kälte Klima GmbH.
HiRef has relied on BITZER compressors for years and therefore turned to the Sindelfingen specialists for this project as well. As the choice of a sustainable refrigerant plays a central role, HiRef opted for an extraordinary solution: Instead of scroll compressors, 96 screw compressors with external frequency converters were installed in the 48 cooling systems for the first time.
