A compressor that will not start is not automatically a failed compressor. The fault may be in the supply, contactor, overload, terminal connections or refrigeration operating conditions. Qualified personnel can use electrical tests as part of a controlled diagnosis, but measurements must always be taken with safe isolation and the manufacturer instructions for the exact model.
Rule out external electrical faults first
Verify supply voltage, phase balance where applicable, fuses, contactor operation, overload setting and terminal condition. Record whether the compressor trips immediately, hums, runs briefly or has no start command. These symptoms help separate a control issue from a possible motor problem and prevent an unnecessary replacement.
Compare winding resistance correctly
With the compressor isolated, identify the terminals from the manufacturer documentation and measure winding resistance using a suitable meter. Compare readings between phases or between start, run and common terminals as appropriate for the motor type. A clearly open circuit, an unexpected imbalance or a reading inconsistent with the model data needs further investigation; temperature affects resistance, so a single value should never be interpreted in isolation.
Check insulation without damaging electronics
An insulation-resistance test can reveal a winding-to-earth fault, but it must be performed only with compatible test voltage and after disconnecting electronics that could be damaged. Follow the compressor maker instructions and local electrical safety rules. Do not energise a compressor with suspicious insulation readings or bypass protective devices to obtain a result.
Find the cause before fitting a replacement
A burned winding can be the consequence of low voltage, phase loss, locked rotor, liquid return, overheating or repeated short cycling. Investigate these conditions, clean the circuit where required and replace associated electrical parts before restarting. RCP can help identify a compatible compressor and the relevant electrical or service parts when you provide the full model, refrigerant and application details.
